LEGENDARY MITCH BOOTH TO ATTEND THE ST BARTH CATA CUP

His track record is very impressive. He has sailed on just about every type of craft and won dozens of world and national championships, in addition to two Olympic medals on Tornado in 1992 and 1996.

In 40 years of sailing, Mitch Booth has never had the opportunity to compete in the St Barth Cata Cup even though he is very familiar with the F18.

He will be in St Barth this year with crew Andy Dinsdale. Mitch kindly agreed to answer our questions.

Would it be true to say that you have sailed on about every type of catamaran? Do you have a preference and why?

Yes, I probably have sailed most types of Catamarans. There are some nice beach cats on my favourite list but I think the 18 square meter with wing is one of the best, very wide and powerful boat that is a real pleasure to race. A Class cat is also very rewarding with being so light it responds to every movement.

You hold an impressive track record of medals at Olympics, Worlds, National championships. What are you next striving for?

There are still races I like to compete in and Americas Cup is one of them. The new World Match Race Tour is also very attractive. And of course if there is ever a larger sized foiling cat in the next Olympics…who knows!

Tell me about your current project, a superyacht called the BlackCat.

BlackCat is a new brand of Superyacht. I decided a few years ago after doing some Superyacht events on Monohulls, one of which is the Bucket Race on St Barth, that a big Cat could work. We have progressed a long way and hope to have the 50 meter model sailing in the near future

You have been everywhere but this is your first time at the St Barth Cata Cup. Are you familiar with the event and what are you looking forward to?

Each time I have raced in St Barth its been on big boats and I often think how nice it would be to race on a sports Cat. Now I get the chance and really looking forward to some action racing. I know conditions can be hard some times and the challenge to race against some of the best Cat sailors in the World will be fun. I have not been on trapeze since last July when I raced with my son Ruben at the Hobie Wild Cat Worlds, which we won.
