Who Can Topple The Mourniac-Durand Duo?

After competing in two great races yesterday, the 57 teams in the 14th St. Barth Cata Cup set out on a tour around the island, then a round-trip race between St Jean Bay and Ile Chevreau, on Friday, once again confronting challenging conditions. But conditions in which it seems that the duo of Tim Mourniac and Pierre-Yves Durand (Segeco) are literally untouchable. These two sailors, who totally dominated the day before. once again won the debate, clocking two new race victories and at the same time winning the special prize for the tour around the island as well as the EDEN ROCK VILLA RENTAL Prize. So it’s no surprise that they are in first place in the provisional overall standings. A list that has really been shaken up this evening, as the worst score for each team (excepting the tour around the island) has been eliminated after the first four regattas, as stipulated by the rules of the race.

On Friday, November 18, the 57 duos racing in the 14e St. Barth Cata Cup set sail on a tour around the island. A race that is eliminated from the standings, and clearly an important race for the ratings even though it does not count double as it has in previous years. “We did a briefing with Kinou (editor’s note: Jean-Christophe Mourniac, winner of the 2019 regatta, as well as his father). They reminded us to check and double check our boat before this legendary tour around the island, an essential race for the final results. But karma caught up with us anyway, as we broke our Cunningham (editor’s note: a means of adjusting the shape of a sail) as we were starting out. Luckily we were able to repair it and gain time on the first tacks. We rapidly sailed to the front and took a nice lead to finally win,” says Tim Mourniac, who largely dominated the debates in the morning, yet watched the competition swoop down on him when passing the marker in front of Gustavia. “The marker was very close to the port in a zone where there little to no wind. This had an elastic effect. The fleet was very close together before spreading out again. We were a little nervous, but in the end it did make have an impact on our place at the finish line,” notes the helmsman from Segeco, who drove in the final nail in the afternoon, with a round-trip race, on the wind, then downwind, that the leaders gobbled up in about 45 minutes. “On such a short race, there is naturally a lot of intensity at the beginning. With Pierre-Yves, we moved into third position at the windward mark and attacked with a lot of force before the dogleg , which allowed up to unfurl our spinnaker before the others. From there the race was ours,” adds Tim.

A ”Clean Sheet” To Maintain

With four victories in four races, Tim and his teammate are logically at the head of the standings. Who can stop them in their grand slam. That, of course, remains the big question. “At the moment we have a “clean sheet” to maintain, as we have not lost a single race. Evidently, we are happy. With Pierre-Yves, we get along well and are having fun on the water. We go from tack to tack, from wave to wave. We try to but a lot of intensity and precision into what we do. The results are there but it will be very close right to the end, because even if we are dominating, on paper there is still a long way to go,” muses Tim Mourniac. As the worst score for each team was excluded from the ratings this evening, the result was a scrambling of the list. This was especially important for the position of the tandem of Cruz Gonzalez Smith–Mariano Heuser (SBDE). The Argentineans has placed 17th in the first round after a problem with their jib sheet, so after that race was eliminated they moved from 10th place to second, just three points behind the leaders. “We had played our joker, but with second place for the other races, at this point in the competition, we are definitely still in the running to go after first place, even if we are aware that Tim and Pierre-Yves are going to be difficult to catch. They have not made a single error. As for us, we have the speed, upwind and downwind. We just really have to try not to do anything stupid and do things as simply as possible,” comments Cruz Gonzalez Smith, title holders for the St. Barth Cata Cup, who will not surrender so easily. Same story for Belgians Patrick Demesmaeker and Olivier Gagliani (Les Perles de Saint-Barth–Bativrd) who are still among the contenders, along with a handful of others!

Hard-Fought Victory For Ravi Parent & Nicolas Lovisa!
19/11/2023

While last year's winners Tim Mourniac and Pierre-Yves Durand were assured of first place even before the final day of competition, this year was the opposite, and we had to wait until the very last moment to find out the names of the winners of this 15th St.Barth Cata Cup. So much so, in fact, that victory was initially announced as going to the duo Gurvan Bontemps - Benjamin Amiot (Pixail), before finally being awarded to the duo of Ravi Parent - Nicolas Lovisa (Maxwell & Co for man and woman). At the end of the day, the Americans, who finished in eighth last year on their first appearance in the regatta, beat their rivals by one tiny point, while Argentina's Agustn Krevisky and Nicolas Aragones (Design Affairs OO1) completed the podium in third place.

A Decisive Final Day
18/11/2023

After two rather invigorating days of racing, the 56 crews of the St.Barth Cata Cup returned to lighter conditions on Saturday. But lighter doesn't always mean easier. All the crews had to deal with very unstable conditions, both in terms of strength and, above all, direction. In this context, consistency was certainly not easy, but the duos Gurvan Bontemps-Benjamin Amiot (Pixail) and Ravi Parent-Nick Lovisa (Maxwell & Co for man and woman) did remarkably well. The former won the "St Barth Assurances Allianz" Prize, while the latter climbed to first place in the provisional overall rankings. A ranking that continues to be turned upside down due to measurement issues. On Sunday, the final day of competition in this 15th edition, everything will be decided!

When One Man's Misfortune Is Another Man’s Happiness!
17/11/2023

After two great first legs—including the around-the-island race—on Thursday, the 56 crews taking part in the 15th St. Barth Cata Cup enjoyed even sportier conditions on Friday. The result: a few stylistic tricks, a lot of capsizing, and a bit of breakage, but above all, a great battle at every level of the fleet. At the front, however, there were no major surprises. Tim Mourniac and Pierre-Yves Durand (Segeco) won ahead of Henri Demesmaeker and Jeroen Van Leeuwen (Ohana) and then Emeric Dary and Joris Cocaud (Allianz), taking the "EDEN ROCK VILLA RENTAL" prize in the provisional rankings. However, there is a problem with the measurement conformity of the boat supplied to them especially for the regatta by the manufacturer, which led to their disqualification in races 1 and 2. Although this blow is understandably hard to take, the two men have already proved that they are resourceful and intend to continue imposing a hellish pace on their rivals, even if this obviously changes the overall picture considerably.

The Battle Is About To Begin!
November,15 2023

After a day devoted to assembling the boats, confirming entries, and final training sessions, the 56 duos taking part in the 15th edition of the St.Barth Cata Cup are getting ready to hit the waves. On Thursday, starting at 9:30 am, they will start the first race of the event, which promises to be lively, with between 15 and 20 knots of east-southeasterly wind forecast for the entire weekend. This promises to be a high-flying regatta, which will certainly not displease the big guns in the series, starting with title holders Tim Mourniac and Pierre-Yves Durand (Segeco), who left nothing but crumbs for their opponents last year, but whom their rivals intend to upset this year!

Preparations For The 15th St.Barth Cata-Cup Are Underway
24 novembre 2023

In less than a month, the 55 teams registered for the 2023 St.Barth Cata-Cup will be battling it out on the waves, with multiple contenders for the ultimate victory. Among them, Tim Mourniac and Pierre-Yves Durand who will be back to defend their title, while other big names from the F18 circuit include Mitch Booth, double Tornado Olympic medalist, as well as Swedish sailor Rasmus Rosengren, winner of the F18 world championships last July. In short, there is plenty to celebrate for the 15th anniversary of this regatta!
