KING OCEAN : CARRYING ON THE TRADITION

King Ocean (Nicolas Monocandilos) has been a logistics partner of the St Barth Cata Cup for many years.

The company has been instrumental in ensuring that the American and Canadian sailors boats arrive in St Barth on time.

Here is how King Ocean takes charge of loading containers every year with the special and essential help of sailor and logistics specialist John Casey.

What type of partnership do you have with the Cata Cup organization?

We have been sponsoring the Cata Cup I believe since 2007. Back then it was Bernuth that was the liner company that had recently begun a liner service to St Barths with RMP as our local St Barths representatives. In late 2012, King Ocean assumed the shipping services of Bernuth and continued the tradition of sponsoring the St Barth Cata Cup.

What does a typical loading day look like with the sailors?

John Casey and my sister Lina were instrumental in organizing the loading and shipping of the container that gets loaded with all of the sailors’ boats and gear every year. After she left the company a couple of years ago, I have assumed the mantle of working the logistics of the initial shipping down of the container and it’s return back to Miami with John Casey.

He works hard at rounding up all the sailors and getting the full lists of materials and the details of their boats that get loaded into the container and providing us with all the proper shipping documents that we need. He’s become somewhat of a logistics specialist when it comes to moving around these racing boats! We rely on him to assist in providing us with the necessary information to make the shipping go smoothly.

I hope that this year, I will actually get the chance to see the race, which I never have had the opportunity of doing!
